Youth Softball (Ages 3–10)
Learn, Play & Have Fun!
Whether your child is picking up a bat for the first time or is ready to take the next step in their softball journey, Howick Softball Club has a programme designed just for them.
Our Youth Softball grades focus on building confidence, learning new skills, making friends, and most importantly—having fun in a supportive, encouraging environment.
No previous experience is needed. Everyone is welcome!
Small Sox (Ages 3–5)
Small Sox is our fun, play-based introduction to softball, designed especially for children aged 3–5 years.
At this age, the focus is on participation, encouragement and having fun while children begin learning the basic skills of softball in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Using age-appropriate equipment including foam bats and softer balls, players are introduced to:
- Throwing
- Catching
- Hitting
- Fielding
- Running bases
- Working as part of a team
Every child gets the opportunity to participate and try different skills throughout the session, helping build confidence, coordination and a love for the game.
Parent Participation
Parents are encouraged to get involved and join in the fun! Your support helps children feel confident, while also giving families the opportunity to learn the basics of softball together.
Many of our future coaches start by simply helping their child on the field, so we love having families involved from the very beginning.
Session Information
Small Sox sessions run on Saturday mornings and are approximately 45 minutes in duration.
Small Sox is the perfect first step before progressing into Tee Ball when your child is ready.
Tee Ball (Ages 5–6)
Tee Ball is the perfect introduction to softball.
Players learn the fundamentals of throwing, catching, hitting, running the bases and working as a team in a fun, relaxed environment where participation comes first.
At this level, players will:
- Bat from a tee
- Learn the basics of fielding and throwing
- Develop confidence and coordination
- Build friendships while having fun
- Be encouraged every step of the way by coaches and parents
Our focus is on creating a positive first sporting experience where every child has the opportunity to learn, grow and enjoy the game.
Flexi Ball (Ages 7–10)
As players develop, they progress into Flexi Ball.
Using a manual pitching machine, players begin hitting a moving ball while continuing to build on the skills they've already learned in Tee Ball.
Players develop:
- Batting technique
- Throwing and catching
- Fielding skills
- Base running
- Game awareness
- Teamwork and sportsmanship
Our experienced coaches focus on player development while ensuring every child feels included, supported and has fun.
Season Information
The Youth Softball season runs from October through to March, beginning after Labour Weekend.
Games are played on Saturday mornings at Meadowlands Reserve.
Typical game times are:
- Tee Ball: TBC
- Flexi Ball: TBC
There are no games or trainings during the school holidays, giving families a chance to enjoy a well-earned break before returning to the season.
Game times may vary slightly depending on team numbers and scheduling.
Uniforms
Your registration includes a club playing top and playing pants, which are provided on loan for the season and returned at the end.
Players are required to purchase a club playing cap.
New for this season! Thanks to a club initiative, every NEW registered Youth Softball player will receive their very own softball glove to keep (when fees are paid in full). We hope this helps make getting started even easier for new players.
If you have any questions about uniforms or sizing, our committee is happy to help.
Not Sure Which Grade?
As a general guide:
